Christian rapper FLAME, a Boyce College student, has been nominated for a Grammy Award for his recent album “Our World Redeemed.”

FLAME’s album received the nomination in the Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album category, along with Christian Rock artists After Edmund, tobyMac, Superchick, and Sanctus Real. Garnering support with the hit single and music video
“Joyful Noise,” “Our World Redeemed” debuted in the No. 5 position on the Billboard Top Gospel Chart, No. 1 slot on Soundscan’s Christian R&B/Hip-Hop20 Chart, and No. 7 position on iTunes’ mainstream Rap Chart.

A 2008 Holy Hip Hop Award honoree, FLAME has been ministering for over 10 years in music and speaking engagements. His last album, ‘Our World Fallen’ peaked to the No. 7 position on the Billboard Top Gospel Chart.

FLAME—Marcus Williams—was born in the inner city of St. Louis and was converted to Christianity at the age of 16. He is a biblical counseling major at Boyce College, the undergraduate school of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Denny Burk, dean of Boyce College, said FLAME’s music, which is filled with Gospel content, is a much-needed presence in the popular music scene.

“We are grateful for Flame and his ministry,” Burk said. “He is probably the only hip-hop artist that you’ll ever hear to rap about total depravity and the hypostatic union. His lyrics are rooted deeply in the Bible and theological clarity. He is exactly the kind of guy we need as an ambassador for Christ at this key event in American pop culture. Moreover, Flame is a talented artist. He deserves this nomination, and I will be cheering him on to win the award.”

The 51st annual Grammy Awards will be held on Feb. 8, 2008 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
