The 16th Heritage Golf Classic, an annual fundraising event for The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary that keeps tuition affordable for students, generated a record amount of support at the August 26 golf tournament.
This year’s scramble-style tournament raised $260,000 for the seminary’s annual fund, which is the most money ever raised at the Heritage Classic. While the events of the day were significantly altered by inclement weather, 124 golfers making up 31 different teams fellowshipped in the clubhouse during the rainy afternoon.
“I want to say thank you, on behalf of Southern Seminary and the student body, to all the participants and all the sponsors who helped make this year possible,” said Edward Heinze, vice president of Institutional Administration at Southern Seminary. “This year, we raised more than $260,000, and those dollars will be deposited directly into the Southern Fund, which will help defray the costs for our student body as they take classes on our campus.”
At the tournament each year, the seminary awards one student the Rick Bordas Student Scholarship, which is named after the late Rick Bordas, a longtime friend of Southern Seminary. This year’s winner was Rex Chen, who received the award from Bordas’s widow, Lori, and his son, Josh.
More than 45 individual or business sponsors supported the event, including major sponsors Marvin and Nancy St. John and Bachman Autogroup.
“We think there’s no better stewardship than putting a student at Southern Seminary in a classroom with our faculty, and that’s exactly what this money will help us do this year,” Heinze said.
The 17th annual Heritage Golf Classic will be held at Big Spring Country Club on August 24. It will be Big Spring’s seventh straight year hosting the Heritage Classic. More details will be available soon at sbts.edu.
