Some lessons can be learned by lecture, some by the reading of books. Other lessons, however, can only be learned and fully appreciated by standing in a place where history turned. That is why I love taking friends to places where our own history and heritage were formed.
I want to invite you to go with me on a very special tour of the United Kingdom, specifically designed to consider the heritage of English-speaking Christianity. Together, we will see with our own eyes places that ring through history, ranging from Westminster Abbey in London to Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, York, St. Andrews, and a succession of places that in space and time were the stages on which history has happened, doctrines were understood, the Bible was translated into English, and the Christian faith was shaped.
We will have a private dinner together in the Cabinet War Rooms under the city of London, where Winston Churchill led the battle to save civilization during World War II. We will walk together on medieval streets and stand together on ancient walls. Along the way, we will enjoy some of the finest in hospitality, dining, and cultural experiences.
I’ll be honest – to know me is to know my love for what Churchill called “the history of the English-Speaking Peoples.” I proudly stand in the theology and doctrine of the English Reformation, and 1 enjoy connecting the events of history to the great issues of our own day.
I will be lecturing and teaching all along the way, and those who travel with us will learn with us as well. We will learn why King Henry Vill and his six wives are important to church history. We will stand where martyrs for the faith gave their final earthly testimony in their own blood. We will seek to understand the past in order to be more faithful in the present age.
I venture to add that we will have a great deal of fun along the way: One of the great added joys of travel is the making of new friends. As you can tell, I am excited about it already. Mary and I hope that you will be able to join us.
