Institute for Christian Leadership

The Institute for Christian Leadership at SBTS provides online theological training for individuals like:
- Those who do not meet educational, financial, linguistic or residency requirements for admission to regular degree programs
- Those who have already completed formal theological training, but who have a need for refresher courses
- Those who, regardless of prior training, simply want to increase their knowledge of Scripture and/or practical ministry issues

Nine courses are required for each of five available certificates. Completion of a certificate takes approximately two and a half years. All courses are delivered online and include elements such as forum discussions, book and article reviews, reading assignments, quizzes and final exams. Class sizes range from 5 to 15 students.
The basic ICL curriculum includes:

I4015 Personal Spiritual Disciplines
Certificate in Theological Studies
Participants may complete a Certificate in Theological Studies by successfully completing the six core courses plus three additional courses in theological/historical studies, such as:

I2620 Southern Baptist Heritage
Certificate in Great Commission Studies
Participants may complete a Certificate in Great Commission Studies by successfully completing the six core courses plus three additional courses in missions, church growth, and evangelism, such as:

I3206 Building an Evangelistic Church
Certificate in Christian Ministry
Participants may complete a Certificate in Christian Ministry by successfully completing the core curriculum, plus three courses in church leadership, such as:

Certificate in Women’s Leadership
Participants may complete a Certificate in Women’s Leadership by successfully completing the core curriculum, plus three courses in women’s leadership, such as:

I4850 Leadership Skills for Women
Certificate in City-Reaching
Participants may complete a Certificate in City-Reaching by successfully completing the core curriculum, plus choosing three of the four courses below in Urban Ministry such as:

I5010 Ministry in the Urban Context
I5020 Community/Church Research and Analysis
I5030 Evangelism and Christian Social Ministries
Costs
$35 one-time, non-refundable admissions fee
$150 tuition per course
Books and/or other resources as required by the instructor
Admission
Prospective students apply through the Office of Admissions, using the Institute for Christian Leadership application.
Accreditation
Course credits from the ICL may not be transferred to regular degree programs at Southern Seminary and credits from other institutions may not be transferred to the Institute.
