What Students are Saying

Below are actual words from actual students.
It’s a sampling of how students see online and hybrid learning at Southern as a plus!

Online and hybrid courses provide great flexibility…

For my situation, I find online courses much more helpful and effective than traditional campus-based courses because of the flexibility it provides. Ministry at the church is often unpredictable, but with video lectures and email correspondence, I can stay on top of my seminary work well. Also, it allows me to practically apply everything I am learning in real-time to the church plant, so it actually allows me to learn a lot more.  ~SSO Student

Online courses make learning more accessible…

I LOVE ONLINE COURSES! The on-line lectures are comparable to traditional lectures, but I succeed in grasping more concepts from the video than from the classroom. The video lectures focuses me on the more important parts, and there is no classroom of people to distract me. The lectures in online format are a much better tool for me to learn the material in the syllabus, because I can look through my notes and actually re-watch lectures if I find a gap. I process the information better, because I take better notes utilizing “pause” and “rewind”.  ~SSO Student

Online and hybrid courses help fit into your other responsibilities…

I am actually an on campus student and live locally. However, I have a life, a job, a wife, a daughter, and a full time job. The Modular courses allow me to do schoolwork in a way that fits around these other responsibilities. Further, they allowed me to listen to lectures and rewind and repeat them if I missed something. This also got the lectures out of the way so that in the actual class time, the days on campus were spent in in depth conversation with much question and answer. The professor said he covered a lot during this time that he normally has to save for his elective courses.    How might I find out what classes are going to be offered next semester? I’m eager to take more!  ~Hybrid Student

Hybrids help you maintain solid family ties while pursuing distance education…

This Hybrid Modular program is a blessing from the Lord.  My wife and I have a 6 month-old baby girl, and this semester, we were going to be very hard-pressed to take more than two classes and adequately care for our daughter.  Then, a little note on a seminary email was sent to us – Modular classes are now offered.   They could not be more perfect for our family where we struggle to juggle (work, school, baby girl, church commitments, you know, without pulling out our hair or one another’s?).  Moreover, I’ve been offered a job outside of Louisville.  Prior to these hybrid classes I don’t think we would’ve even considered it.  However, now that I may be able to accomplish a large part of my degree through these classes without resorting to strictly online education, we will likely take the job, which will allow my wife to stay home and raise our baby girl. What does this tell me about Southern?  To me, it says when Southern has a conference on strengthening families and marriages, they mean it and back it with policy aimed at helping families grow and thrive through the seminary experience (rather than come out wounded and weary).  It also tells me that Southern is keenly interested in getting top-notch theological training to as many people as possible to strengthen local churches.  Praise God for such a program.  Thanks again!  ~Hybrid Student

Online courses stay more on-track…

I love online courses over traditional campus-based courses. They are just as effective as long as you are self-motivated to do the work.  The courses are more on-track and less hurried to make up time at the end of the semester.  I think they are very comparable.  I love online learning.  ~SSO Student

Hybrid courses are a welcome option to meet on-campus residency requirement…

There seems to be great receptivity for the hybrid format. It’s a welcome option for us distance students, allowing us to make the most of our time and finances.  ~Hybrid Student

Hybrid courses provide the opportunity to get to know your professors…

I just wanted to thank you for all your work in making the hybrid modular classes a reality.  All four classes I took this past week went really well, and I’m blessed to have been able to take them in this format.  Since I don’t have an extension campus near where we live, this is a great opportunity to have face-time with professors while still pursuing my degree from a distance.  Thank you for pioneering this new learning avenue.

That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
