Safety & Security Tips

Employee and Student Responsibility

Cooperation and involvement of all members of the seminary community in our campus safety and security program is absolutely necessary. At Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, we sincerely believe that “Security Begins With You”. The students and staff must assume responsibility for their own personal belongings and safety by taking simple common sense precautions.

Although our campus is well lit, members of the seminary community may feel more comfortable using the campus escort service when returning to their vehicles or residence halls late at night.

Room doors should be locked at night and when they are unoccupied. Valuable items such as stereos, cameras, radios or televisions left in residence hall rooms or in offices should be marked with an engraving instrument with an identifying number or mark. Purses or wallets should not be left in rooms or offices in plain view when they are readily accessible to the public.

Vehicles parked on campus should be locked and valuables locked in the trunk at all times. Thefts do occur during the daytime. Any suspicious looking individuals whom you believe do not belong in your building, or any unusual incident in or around your building should be reported to the Department of Campus Safety and Security.

Security in Residential Facilities

The community houses students in residence halls and apartments. Resident assistants live in the residence halls and are on call 24 hours a day.

Residence Assistant Staff members undergo thorough training in the enforcement of security and safety policies. They participate in lectures and seminars, associated with the safety and security of the seminary, conducted by seminary administrators and Campus Safety and Security personnel.

Services and programs intended to enhance the quality of life and to assure the safety and security of the resident student body are a major priority of the seminary administrators and staff.

Safety and security policies and procedures, especially regarding locking individual rooms, building entrances, door propping and related precautions are discussed with the residents in crime prevention programs, routine floor meetings in the residence halls. These sessions are conducted by the Residence Staff and Department of Campus Safety and Security.

Residential Security Measures

The doors leading directly into the areas of the halls are locked at certain times of the evening. Visitors to residence halls must be escorted through the residence halls by a resident at all times.

During Christmas and semester breaks, when classes are not in session, special security procedures are established for residence halls.

Types of housing, policies, room selection and other matters concerning residential life are published in the Housing Guidelines and the Student Handbook.

The Blur of Gender — Is The New York Times Trying to Tell Us Something?
by R. Albert Mohler Jr.Nov 20

Is The New York Times trying to tell us something? Just eleven days after running a story on gender-bending teenagers on the front page of its “Style” section, the paper is back with yet another front page story in the same section, this time on gender-bending young adults. The articles even cite the same psychologist as authority. What’s going on here?
