Doxology:
Doxology represents the new and exciting training paradigm offered to those called to worship ministry in the Division of Biblical Worship at Southern Seminary. The vision and purpose of this ensemble is to provide musically excellent, gospel-centered worship leadership for the seminary community, our SBC churches and colleges, and to serve as ambassadors of the seminary throughout the region and nation. Most of the members of the group are majoring in one of the worship concentrations in the School of Church Ministries. Doxology is under the direction of Professor Chuck Lewis, who is beginning his second year on faculty at Southern.
For more information about participation in Doxology, you can contact Prof. Chuck Lewis at ctlewis@sbts.edu. For information about other SBTS music ensembles (such as the Southern Chorale or Chapel Orchestra), degree programs or classes offered through the Division of Biblical Worship in the School of Church Ministries, contact Dr. Joe Crider at jrcrider@sbts.edu.
Norton Hall:
Making their debut as the new worship band of Southern Seminary, Norton Hall will launch their worship leading ministry in Spring of 2013. The band has already served as the worship leaders for the Strengthening Your Marriage in Ministry Conference and the Expositors Summit during this past fall semester.
Norton Hall is being led by Devon Kauflin who is no stranger to SBTS. He has led events on campus with his NA band and has recorded a number of songs that reflect his passion for Christ-centered, gospel-focused worship music.
We are also excited to introduce Jonatan Barahona, one of the newest keyboardist at SBTS. Coming from Palm Beach Florida, Jonatan has been the keyboardist for Ingrid Rosario, a Hispanic worship leader with international influence. He’s also a singer and a composer.
The vision and purpose of Norton Hall is to encourage and promote Christ-centered, gospel-focused worship through biblically-guided worship, original compositions, artistic excellence and service to the seminary and constituent churches. In addition to serving conferences on campus, Norton Hall is available to lead worship at conferences, student unions, and church events off campus. For more information about securing Norton Hall for an event, please contact Dr. Joe Crider at jrcrider@sbts.edu or 502.897.4115.
Southern Chorale:
Under the direction of Dr. Greg Brewton, Southern Chorale is a choral ensemble that provides worship leadership primarily for SBTS chapel services. The chorale meets for rehearsals on Monday afternoons from 4:00 pm to 5:45 pm. The chorale prepares a wide variety of chorale literature – from traditional spirituals and sacred chorale works to modern worship songs. All singers (students, faculty, staff and friends of the seminary) are welcome to take part in the Southern Chorale for the purpose of worshiping the Lord, encouraging the seminary community in corporate worship, the enjoyment of excellent chorale literature and to fellowship through music with others associated with our campus.
For more information about singing in the Southern Chorale please contact Dr. Greg Brewton at gbrewton@sbts.edu. For more information about participation in music ensembles (such as the Chapel Orchestra or Campus Bands), degree programs or classes offered through the Division of Biblical Worship in the School of Church Ministries please contact Dr. Joe Crider at jrcrider@sbts.edu.
Chapel Orchestra:
The Chapel Orchestra provides instrumental preludes and worship accompaniment for the Tuesday morning chapels on the SBTS campus. From more traditional hymn renditions to the newest Praise Chart arrangements, the orchestra plays a wide variety of musical styles and genres. The ensemble utilizes instruments from both the symphonic band and string orchestra in fulfilling its purpose to provide instrumental accompaniment in the enhancement of corporate worship during chapels and special campus events. On many occasions throughout the semester, the Chapel Orchestra collaborates with the Southern Chorale, Boyce College Choir and Doxology for special chapel services. Although no formal audition for the group is required, at least 3 years of playing experience on a band or orchestra instrument is necessary due to the difficulty of the music. The orchestra rehearses from 9:00 am to 9:50 am on Tuesday mornings prior to the 10:00 am chapel service. For more information about the Chapel Orchestra, please contact the conductor, Dr. Joe Crider at jrcrider@sbts.edu.
Seminary Worship Bands:
The Seminary Worship Bands are auditioned groups that serve as the rhythm section for the seminary chapel each Tuesday and Thursday morning. These bands are the “backbones” of each chapel service as they provide the musical foundation through the instrumentation of the modern rhythm section. Because bands are utilized for both the Tuesday and Thursday chapel services , positions are open to qualified players who have expertise on drum kit, guitar, electric guitar, piano, keys and bass guitar. Students who are asked to serve in one of the bands are required to attend rehearsals prior to the chapel services and must have 8:00 am to 11:00 am free on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
For the Thursday band members, a Wednesday afternoon rehearsal will also be scheduled. For more information about Seminary Worship Bands please contact Dr. Joe Crider at jrcrider@sbts.edu.
