From the beginning,
he believed in the
power of the Word.

He believed that the hope for dying men was to hear the Word, and he believed that preachers of the Word could be better prepared. With these convictions James P. Boyce led Southern Baptists to open an institution to prepare ministers of
the Gospel.

Boyce and the other founders opened The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in October of 1859. It was an untimely beginning. They overcame that initial struggle, but other tests in other generations have demanded fresh resolve to preserve and to advance what they began. The mission of the seminary has grown and ultimately prospered through the unfolding years.

The successes and the struggles cause us all the more to celebrate what God has done through this institution and to commit ourselves to the vision of the founders, to the truth of Christ's church and to preserving this legacy for future generations.
