Ministers in the MilitaryFaculty AdvisorDr. Mark Coppenger, Distinguished Professor of Christian Apologetics
During his collegiate years, Dr. Coppenger participated in the ROTC at Ouachita Baptist University. After college he served in the Tennessee National Guard. While the unit was winding down from Vietnam he began his doctoral work at Vanderbilt. When he went to Wheaton to teach philosophy, he joined the Illinois National Guard, where he served as a company executive officer and a combat support company commander. Sensing a call to the pastorate, Dr. Coppenger returned to school at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary to pursue his M. Div. While there, he joined the Individual Ready Reserve, serving two-week tours with infantry units at Ft. Knox, Ft. Campbell, and Ft. Hood. Upon graduation from Southwestern, Dr. Coppenger pastored in Arkansas. Still his faithful service to the military remained. While a senior pastor, Dr. Coppenger was an Individual Mobilization Augmentee, serving two-week tours at Ft. Irwin and the Pentagon. We are blessed to have Dr. Coppenger, a faithful husband to Sharon, father of three grown children, an erudite scholar, an experienced minister and a loyal serviceman, to oversee our student organization.
